I’m in Palermo, Sicily for a conference called The Startup World Cup. This is the strangest place you could host a tech meetup considering Sicily’s two largest exports are Cannoli’s & Mafia members. Anyway, here’s what we talk about in today’s newsletter:

YC Founder Causes Outrage On X

Last week Matthew Pan announced the launch of his new YC backed startup PearAI & almost immediately a pack of ravenous, angry, tech bros came out of the bushes to attack him. 

This feud was confusing for a lot of people in the tech industry who enjoy sunlight & having sex, so I’m going to do my best to break down what the fuck happened. 

Basically two Korean pop star looking coders forked (aka copied part of the source code) of a code editor (VS Code) & an AI coding assistant (Continue). 

Even though these hot young coders were upfront about what they did, sweaty tech nerds with 300 followers attacked them for allegedly breaking the law. 

Pan responded to these claims saying, “dawg I chatgpt’d the license… I can’t be bothered with legal”. 

This is how Tony Soprano would respond if he was GenZ. 

Honestly I’m pissed I didn’t get a chance to invest in these guys. 

If I’ve learned anything from watching founders like SBF, Adam Neumann, and Elizabeth Holmes - it’s that flagrant disregard for the U.S. legal system means a startup is easily worth 200x revenue.

Billionaire Says U.S. Needs a “Warrior Class”

Last Tuesday Palmer Luckey, Founder of Defense Startup Anduril, spoke at Pepperdine University where he “raged against America’s adversaries, endorsed autonomous weapons, & claimed that every country needs a warrior class”.

It says a lot about the state of the U.S. when an elite member of our “warrior class” has a mullet, goatee, & exclusively wears Hawaiian shirts. 

In the interview Palmer went on to say, “You need people like me who are sick in that way and who don’t lose any sleep making tools of violence in order to preserve freedom.”

As a VC I relate to this statement. You need people like me who don’t lose any sleep crushing founders dreams, working unpaid interns to the bone, and spending my LPs money on trips to Europe.

For those that don’t know, Luckey is famous for being founder the Virtual Reality company Oculus. Apparently building a startup that’s best use case is to help dorks jerk off in the metaverse wasn’t satisfying enough for him, so he pivoted to building weapons.
